Wildlife adventures at home
Jun. 20th, 2024 11:55 pm(This is not as exciting as the bear in AA's yard - yesterday she showed me the tree it had been climbing, and it had been within 15' of her....)
This afternoon, I settled in J's yard to read again, as it was warm again, and I wanted to make more progress in the book I need to get done soon. I was distracted, though. Ambrose imagined himself as a squirrel hunter, and spent quite a long time in the neighbors' maple but on a different trunk. One of the squirrels wasn't willing to endure that and dashed away along the top of the fence, but the other stayed put. Eventually Ambrose went down to the ground, up the fence, and across to a trunk nearer the one with the squirrel, then made a leap, but at the very last moment the squirrel dashed away. Later, Ambrose was even higher, maybe 12' off the ground, but the squirrels were higher still, maybe 30', and he gave up.
Meanwhile, Azalyn had been on my lap, but at the same time we noticed a deer in the flowerbed, hm, maybe 40' away? It was the male with the lame back left leg. Azalyn said "mewp!" loudly then walked resolutely over to meet the deer. It was eating leaves, so she crouched down and ate some grass too. Very cute.
Eventually I resumed reading and got a bit further, but J was being slow to leave for his errands and possibly sword class. We especially needed him to visit JC and get back the card tables and book we'd lent him. J hadn't been communicating with me very well, nor himself either, and eventually he was about to go, but I went out to his car to talk it through with him again, since he still wasn't sure about sword class. All at once, I noticed that paper wasps were entering the space between the front and back doors on J's side of the car! There were four trying to get in, and one succeeded. I told him this, then he backed up the car until it was almost in the street, then climbed out the other side because one of the wasps was in the car with him. (D and S were leaving right then, and D said he'd told J about the wasp nest in his car several times, but J hadn't really processed the information.) I then lent J my car - which I hadn't let him drive before in the three years since I'd bought it - to go to JC's; after that he came directly back and we went on a walk.
After dark, we went out to the car and J dislodged the wasp nest with the blunt tip of his sword. Actually he had to try twice, because when I went out to the car a few minutes later the wasps were still there. But eventually he got the nest out and parked the car properly.
Hm, then later after I'd fed the cats on my porch their night meal, I did hear a possum out there. Lots of wildlife today!
