Last night's concert; D's day today

We had a concert on campus last night that was part of the annual Musicking festival, and it was extra-fun for me because the guest soloist was the younger brother of my son B's best friends in middle school and high school, Nathan Helgeson, a professional baroque bassoonist. My neighbors' son, who plays bass (and elsewhere, viola da gamba) was also playing, and the guest conductor was my friend GP's husband, back from Italy for the occasion. At one point, I realized that I'd had conversations with more than half of the people on stage, and that doesn't include Nate because I'd never talked with him nor heard him perform before. They performed work by four rather obscure contemporaries of J.S. Bach: Johann Christoph Petz, Antonio Caldara, Johann Friedrick Fasch, and Jan Dismas Zelenka.

Before the concert, I chatted briefly with GP, and also JH (recovering from a bad cold), and Nate's mom. Afterwards I talked for quite a while with Nate's mom, briefly with the cellist SPM, and then, on my way back to my car, with the lead violinist, Alice.

Then, today in Dallas, D did get to compete in that fancy regional championship event (the "region" being the United States). All of the players with records of 6-3 or better were qualified to go on to Day Two. He didn't quite get there, at 4-3-1, but he did respectably - and yet not so close that he would feel bad about barely missing out. His friend DH went 2-4, I think. (Players generally drop out once they lose their chance of going on.) They'll both play in side events tomorrow.

It was cloudy today and cooler, but not cold. I read outside, worked a while on the blackberry vines, watched Babylon 5, finished rewatching the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma, and later watched some anime with J.
