Today has been very stressful, although everyone is safe and well, as far as I know. D's plane flights were supposed to take him first to Phoenix, then to Dallas. However, once he was in Phoenix (with an uncomfortably turbulent landing), they continued to "delay" the Dallas flight, already a few hours behind schedule, and then finally cancelled it altogether. He signed up for the next available flight, which isn't until 7 pm tomorrow, so he wouldn't get to Dallas until midnight if that one works out, and then his competition starts on Saturday morning. But that's a big "if" - other people attempting to attend the same event were only able to reschedule for Saturday morning and would miss the competition. And he's heard about planes landing in Dallas and having to sit on the ground for more than eight hours before the passengers could disembark. He also wasn't able to get a hotel voucher in Phoenix and is having to sleep on the seats at the airport, but he still has to pay for tonight at the Dallas hotel because he used third-party booking. He's also signed up for a 4 am standby for the flight, if that really happens. So as his mom, I am very stressed about this big special thing he's supposed to be doing in Dallas! I sure hope it works out and that he eventually gets there on time for the competition and with enough sleep. At least he is safe and making sensible decisions.
I spent much of the afternoon reading outside - it was warm but not very warm, that is, enough that I could be comfortably soaking up heat while J was a bit too cold to read outside with me. Then I went to mini book club, which was great except that I was pretty distracted with D's texting. I didn't want to deter him from using me to vent about all of it, so I advised everyone that I would be putting him first. I did have fun with them, though. And eventually J got home and listened to all my stress and also listened to the entire plot of a Hallmark movie I watched earlier today that was set in Greece, and I'll admit that focusing on that (telling the movie plot) helped me unwind a bit.
