Let's see, so, first was the online Magic tournament. D won $500 and DG won $1000, which is great, although their experiences were of course colored by the losses that kept them from continuing. Meanwhile, J and I did some cleaning and shopping for tomorrow's barbecue, and I did a whole lot of reading, as it was warm and comfortable outside.

In the late afternoon, J headed out on a bike ride and surprised both of us by going much further than he'd gone before on his own. He ended up biking all the way to the river, which is about four miles away, and then along the riverfront path a while too - nearly two hours! From the map it looks like he went about 14 miles. He is in better shape than he realizes.

Fourteen miles is a good distance for someone who hasn't been biking before. I'm building up gradually so I can make it all the way to the coast and back. I think that's about 20 miles.

Presumably that trip back involves a fair amount of elevation gain, too? It's not too bad between here and the river, about 43 meters over a distance of 6.5 km.

The cycling and walking trail to the coast is pretty much level because it follows the river, which by this point is mature and wide. The trail was originally a railway line and trains can't cope with steep gradients, so it's the flattest cycle route in the area.

That sounds great! We have a big hill between our house and downtown (and the river beyond) but thankfully a bike path that mostly skirts the hill.
