Youth Symphony, and a new acquaintance
May. 22nd, 2024 11:51 pmTonight I went to the Youth Symphony performance - they're our top youth orchestra, and the quality is always very high. I especially enjoyed Beethoven's Egmont Overture (a favorite) and the solo performances by three of the students. As a board member I'm supposed to mingle, but I didn't do very much of that - I chatted with one of my neighbors and her friend, then later with our new executive director, two of the other board members, and our conductor, who tells me he's going to get to move back into his house soon, which is great as he's currently commuting about 40 miles.
After that, I headed to the Market of Choice to get a loaf of bread, if they'd restocked it. I got there at 9:36 pm and their closing time is 10 pm, but as I approached the door, a man told me they'd already closed, which is why all the other cars were leaving. There were people working inside, though, and a woman standing outside the closed door looking in, and I thought, I want to stand there looking in too. Maybe someone will come and explain.
The woman and I then started talking. She had just come from a concert - the same one I'd just come from! She plays clarinet and is friends with D's clarinet teacher. She was thinking she might be interested in being on the board of the youth orchestras - which I am! So I talked with her about that a bit. It turns out that... she lives half a block from me! She already knows several people on the board. She teaches writing at LCC and knows my neighbor who teaches there. Then it turns out she regularly walks her dog on my street and knows the neighbors across from me, next door to me on the south side, and next door to J on the north. She was also familiar with the sign I had put out a few years ago about not feeding the semi-feral cats as they get quite enough from me already. I expect I will talk with her again - surely.
Tomorrow is the symphony's performance of a major work by Mahler, but I was so tired tonight that it's hard to envision going. I'm not interested in the Mahler piece either, although maybe I'll decide otherwise. But we expect warmer weather, and I could picture sitting outside and reading for pleasure instead. We'll see!
