Early music, failing hawthorn
Apr. 28th, 2024 11:59 pmThis afternoon I went to an early music concert at the neighborhood Episcopal church. This time it was courtly and country dances performed by the Concert of Fower, part of the Oregon Bach Collegium. Fower is used here as an alternate spelling of Four, rather than a typo for Flower. We heard pieces by Matthew Locke, Matthew Holmes, Francesco Rognoni, Tobias Hume, John Dowland, and Anthony Holborne, and the instruments were baroque violin, viola da gamba, guitar, cello, and two very different shapes of lutes. I enjoyed it all, but my favorites were probably the dances by Matthew Holmes (English, d. 1621) and Tobias Hume (Scottish, d. 1645).
Yesterday I noticed that the hawthorn tree that thinks it wants to grow in the middle of my rose hedge is in full bloom – and by contrast, the full-sized hawthorn tree that shares a flowerbed with my native oak is not. In fact, the full-sized tree is barely alive, it seems. I realized that I need to be much more vigorous in removing the ivy that is now covering its trunk. I worked on it a while today, but some of the vines are much too big for the pruners, so I think I should buy a very small saw. Maybe once it’s been liberated it will spring back to life? I’m sure that’s optimistic, but at least it should be easier to see whether I need to have it removed altogether.
