We have four bookstores within an easy drive - two in south Eugene and two downtown. It's possible the university bookstore still sells some books too? I'm not sure. The two nearest are Tsunami and Black Sun - Tsunami is mostly used books plus a few interesting new ones, and Black Sun is mostly or entirely new, with an emphasis on world literature and philosophy and such. Then downtown we have Smith Family, mostly used and usually a pretty good selection, and J Michaels, mostly new with a nice window display and often good books on art and architecture. All locally owned, etc.

I had a list of books I wanted, and I hadn't been to Smith Family for a while, so after buying the ones I knew I could get at Tsunami (and two others that struck my fancy) I headed downtown. I parked near the game store and walked, but although it was sunny, it was (oddly) also raining. And then, to my surprise, Smith Family didn't have anything I was looking for! I assumed they would have Caves of Steel, but they only had the second and third of Asimov's robot books, which I already have. I also assumed they would have a paperback edition of that Kingsolver book I just read, but they only had it in hardcover (for more than twice what I wanted to pay). I looked for four other books on my list, but nope, not at all.

I then walked back toward my car, realizing a block too late that I could have headed to J. Michaels, but that would have meant another six blocks in the rain at that point, so I decided to drive home via Black Sun. I arrived at 4:45 pm, which would have been fine if they closed as early as J. Michaels (5 pm), but alas, they closed even earlier (4 pm). Oh well.
