The Game, by Laurie R. King. Mary Russell #7. In this one, Russell and Holmes travel to India, where she becomes the guest of a maharaja while the two of them search for Kimball O'Hara, whom Holmes had known in the past - the man who had, many years previously, been the boy known to Kipling fans as "Kim." It's one of my favorites in the series, although The Moor is probably still the tops.

Well, so, within the past year or so I decided that bedtime reading should be limited to rereading light fiction, because that's the nicest for falling asleep, and if I wanted to read anything new or more dramatic, I should do that in the day or evening. Anything truly a "thriller" should be read in a single day so it's not hanging over my imagination. My definition of "light fiction" was fine when I expanded it to Brandon Sanderson books, and it even held for the Vorkosigan books, which I just recently finished, and which have plenty of action and suspense. I read all of them at bedtime just fine. So I decided it would be worthwhile to reread the Mary Russell books, starting with The Game, because I especially wanted to reread the ones I've only read once (which starts with #9), so I figured I'd ease into that with this one I really liked. However, even though I know how everything is going to turn out, and I remember most of the steps in the process, it probably was too exciting for bedtime. It took me a very long time to get to sleep last night, and I had to take a longish nap today. Maybe the differences between Mary Russell and the Vorkosigan books are that these are focused on being suspenseful, and they're first-person narratives. Oh well! Trouble is, I have so much stacked up for daytime/evening reading that I can't really imagine when I'll make the time for these.

I agree that bedtime reading should be light fiction and not upsetting. I read to get drowsy. Too bad that is mostly the only time I read. ;-)
