More Magic - D's Salem adventure
Mar. 16th, 2024 01:03 pmToday is another day that J, D, and DG are devoting to playing Magic, hoping to qualify for that Dallas event at the end of May. Last week, D came in 2nd in two different events, in which only the first-place finisher qualified. Their plan for today had been for all three to play in a Portland event in which the first-place finisher qualifies, but I noticed that a Salem event, intended to be slightly larger, would have the top two finishers qualified, and that seemed like a better option for D, because second-place would be just fine! So they dropped him off in Salem on their way.
Salem is 70 miles north of here and Portland just over 100. D probably got to his event more than an hour before the game store was scheduled to open, so I found him a bakery that he could try to hang out in. I don't think D's ever spent any time in Salem before.
Also, he has three options for coming home. He can wait for J and DG to be done (which could happen several hours after his own event concludes, for all we know). He can get a ride with another Eugene person who was planning to go and has offered him a ride, but as an introvert who isn't particularly friends with this guy, that didn't sound appealing. Or, if he decides he's had enough by 6:30 or so, he can walk a mile and a half to the train station and take the train back to Eugene. It would be a pretty walk, past the state capitol building and the lovely Willamette University campus, and the train would only cost $11. I'm curious how it will work out.
This will probably be D's last attempt to qualify for Dallas, and J's only going along today for the fun of it (the Portland event is in the format he most enjoys, whereas all the other qualifiers have been in a format he doesn't like). If DG doesn't qualify today, though, he'll try next week in Corvallis, so in theory they could all end up qualifying. (The interesting and exciting thing about playing in Dallas, besides the appeal of visiting Texas, is that the top players there qualify to play in Amsterdam in late June. J very much wants to go to that one.)
Meanwhile, I woke up with allergies - tree pollen has skyrocketed - and I'm planning to work on my fun new paper.
