A pig story
Mar. 7th, 2024 11:51 pmMy neighbor Amber, lives on the north side of me, and on the north side of her is a house that's owned by someone out of state who wants to make money without effort. The tenants who'd been there for years had wanted to buy the house, but were told no - they were nice people, both EMTs, with small children, but they moved away. The house was vacant for a while, then a few months back a couple with problems arrived. The man clearly did drugs, according to Amber, and then he was violent against his partner; the kids were taken away by the social services people and one day in the middle of all this, the police came by to make sure the man hadn't killed his partner; eventually she left too, then (thankfully) he did as well.
The really odd thing was that one day in the midst of this, Amber's daughter MN looked out the window and saw a pig in their yard! It was about 80 lbs, pink with big grey-black splotches. Apparently the pig belonged to these people? It ran off and Amber thought maybe it was living in the park, although evidently it returned.
On Monday, I walked up the street to J's mailbox and saw a different couple hanging around in the front yard of this house... with the pig. They looked like people I would not like to be involved with, so I wondered how they now had the pig. Over the next three days, they've left a lot of junk in the front yard, but I hadn't seen the pig again. I saw Amber today, though, and she gave me the update. The new people are squatters (gee, thanks, landlord) - eventually they made it inside the house and noisily trashed the place, and since they aren't renting they don't have garbage service so have to leave their garbage out on the lawn. Another neighbor saw the guy openly smoking meth in the front yard. We very much hope the landlord will manage to remove them and either sell the house or hire a real property manager.
Meanwhile, Amber tells me that the police came to remove the pig. There were four of them, and they were clueless about pigs - they had some idea about putting a leash around its neck and then having it ride uncontained in the back seat of their SUV, as they took it to whatever shelter one uses for abandoned pet pigs. Amber, who grew up on a farm, realized the pig was obviously very hungry, and she found chips and bread, which she fed to it, while the police were saying things like, "Maybe it has teeth!" Um. Another neighbor, Emma, lent the police a dog crate, and Amber managed to get the pig into the crate for them. She said that when the pig was finally fully contained, the four police had looks of awe on their faces. I wish I'd been among the crowd of neighbors who got to see all this happen. (I also wish I knew what would happen to the pig, but Amber is confident it will find a good home.)

Date: 2024-03-10 04:33 pm (UTC)And now the house is trashed. The owner should have just let the EMT drivers buy it, sigh. Out of state landlords with no property manager? A disaster waiting to happen with renters like those, and then squatters. Ugh. Your poor street having to put up with this. :(
