Komarr, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Vorkosigan Saga #10. Miles, in his new role as Imperial Auditor, travels to the planet Komarr to investigate an apparent accident. Soon after his arrival, he meets Ekaterin, the wife of a bureaucrat with whom they have to work with on the case. Ekaterin is a Vor lady, a member of the same aristocratic class as Miles, and he realizes she might be the right woman for him, even though she’s married (and later, newly widowed). She has no such thoughts about Miles and hopes never to be married again, even though she likes and generally trusts Miles, who is also very kind to her son. It’s fun to get a new point-of-view character (Ekaterin and Miles mostly alternate chapters), and she’s very likeable, as are her uncle (Miles’s new colleague) and his wife, who are both professors. The story itself isn’t very noteworthy – that was my conclusion upon realizing that although I remembered liking the book in my earlier reading, I had remembered almost nothing that happens in its second half. It sets us up very nicely for the next one though, which might be the most fun of them all.
