Feb. 12th, 2024 11:58 pmThe It Girl, by Ruth Ware. Last summer, I read The Woman in Cabin 10 and learned that if you're going to read a Ruth Ware thriller, it makes good sense to carve out a block of time and read it all in one go. That served me well today - I read the first ~30 pages on Saturday then all the rest this evening. Very exciting! Two things I appreciated: 1. she gave us a good red herring in the creepy academic - he seemed much more obvious than the actual culprit yet it didn't feel like we were being set up to suspect him, and 2. our heroine probably cared more than we do about the wrongly imprisoned man - it was a kindness to the reader to make him so actively unpleasant. I had procrastinated reading this book for months, expecting it to be stressful; I should learn to trust this author - although I'm sticking with my "all in one go" policy.
