What Moves the Dead, by T. Kingfisher (also known as Ursula Vernon). I'm not sure I'd read any of her books before? I followed her on LJ for years, though, and I believe that one of J's childhood friends has a personal connection with her or her husband. Anyway, this was a fun read, a short horror novel that's essentially a retelling of "The Fall of the House of Usher" with an interesting narrator. My neighbor had lent me the book, and as I was reading it I kept thinking that instead of lending her Gods of Jade and Shadow I should have lent her a different one by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Mexican Gothic, because they are thematically quite similar. And then in the Afterword, T. Kingfisher tells us that she read Mexican Gothic after drafting this one and ended up setting hers aside for a while until she realized their differences were sufficient.
