Ethan of Athos, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Vorkosigan Saga #6 chronologically, although I believe it was published much earlier than that. In this one we get a break from Miles's frenetic energy, although events are still very fast-paced. The planet Athos was founded several hundred years earlier on the basis of religious beliefs about the dangers of women, so its population is entirely male. Ethan is a physician in charge of one of the clinics where babies are made - genes from sperm from the prospective father is mixed with his choice of female genes, from a pool of a finite number of healthy ovaries, but alas their current ovaries are wearing out, and the shipment of new ones had been sabotaged. Ethan is sent forth to buy them new ones or find out what happened to the ones they were supposed to receive. Most of the action takes place on Kline Station, a space station where he meets Miles's employee Elli Quinn. It's a fun story, and this time through I was especially amused that tyramine was given special powers, since now I know that tyramine is a significant migraine trigger.

That was an oddly refreshing read. It wasn't like anything I'd read before. LMB really has a fascination with writing about fertility. Uterine replicators and such. Love it. Love her.
