The Pomegranate Gate, by Ariel Kaplan. This book has been acclaimed as a Jewish epic fantasy, set in Spain during the age of the Inquisition. I kind of liked it, in that I liked some of the characters and ideas, but I wasn't enthusiastic. I was waiting for the big payoff I expected for my deduction that the old woman (who was the most amusing character) was actually the astronomer-magician's long-lost wife, but the book ended without that. I guess it's the first in a planned trilogy; we'll see whether I feel like reading more. Okay, October 22 release, The Republic of Salt, which has cool cover art.
