Jan. 23rd, 2024 04:41 pmCetaganda, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Vorkosigan Saga #5. On the planet Cetanganda, centuries of careful, incremental genetic engineering have produced a caste system in which the highest level of humans, the "haut," are more physically fit, more intelligent, and devastatingly beautiful (at least for the women). In other words, it's a society on the verge of being very scary for its neighbors, whom they've already invaded numerous times (and of course the Cetagandans imagine themselves perfectly entitled to do so, being genetically superior). Miles Vorkosigan and his cousin Ivan find themselves on Cetaganda for the funeral of its empress - and immediately upon their arrival are framed for a major crime. Miles has to solve the crime and a related murder mystery. Definitely fun, although reading just a chapter or two each night made it hard to keep track of what was going on; it was easier the first time I read it.
