The loss of a tree
Jan. 21st, 2024 11:50 pmToday I went out in the rain to pay my respects to our neighborhood tree, a big-leaf maple that stands alone in the meadow at the top of our park, which finally toppled over in the ice storm. Some time back, maybe around 10 years ago, it had suffered storm damage that reduced it to slightly more than half its original size, and now it is totally gone.
Here's how it looks today:

And here it was in June 2022, after it had lost most of the right-hand (eastern) side but was still otherwise thriving:
