We still have power - a true miracle, considering how much it's been flickering today. The forecast called for it to get above freezing around 8 or 9 pm and gradually to warm up into the 40s - that's what it is now, at just after 2 am. The variety of the crashing, cracking, scrambling, and banging sounds as the melting ice is released from trees, roofs, and overhead wires is phenomenal! I spent quite a while just standing in the doorway, listening.

I confess that I did have an adventure out there. Around 11:30 pm I took it into my head that I wanted to be reading the book club book, which is at J's house, and which he'd been reading. So I put on my snow boots, took one glove (a mistake, both would have been better, surely), and grabbed the large stick that D had used yesterday, and headed up the driveway. It's maybe 200 feet? At most?

I made it almost all the way there, but it started getting more slippery. I had thought that the ice above the gravel would be better than the ice above the concrete, but it was slick. Once I'd gotten across it to the rock at the edge of J's flowerbed, I realized that I had better not continue, so I crouched down and phoned him. He brought me the book, then he went inside to see if we had a sled (I guess if we do, it's in my garage), then he went in again to get a plastic bag with loops so I could carry the book. It's painful to crouch for very long. I was reluctant to stand up for the slippery patch so I just scuttled along in a crouch. When I was in a better spot I gradually stood up, but then my legs were wobbly from all the crouching. I shuffled along, a few inches at a time, and finally made it back to my house.

The entire trip took 30 minutes! It was quite interesting, all the sounds, plus some flashing lights in the sky that may have been lightening or may have been electrical crises for other people. It had been raining in a soft, strange way the whole time, too, so my hair was wet. And although it was better to grip the stick with a bare hand, I very much regretted not having the second glove.

Ironically, the title of the book is Cold People. Also ironically, I haven't made time to do any reading since I made it back home again.

Oh that is awful all the slippery ice. To have to crouch down like that is hard on the body. It seems that rare storm caught everyone off guard. I have some ice cleats that I can wrap around my shoes but your ice sounds so bad, that might not have even helped. :(

This is a few days later now that I write and I see you have rain now. Hopefully most of that ice has melt!
