The Vor Game, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Vorkosigan Saga #4. Miles has graduated from the military academy and hopes to be posted to the new Barrayaran flagship but instead finds himself the weatherman at an Arctic outpost under the command of a near-psychopath. Problems ensue. Complications follow. Eventually, Miles finds himself basically on his own out in space and runs into his cousin, the Emperor Gregor, who has run away from home and gotten himself enslaved! I'd totally forgotten about Gregor's mishaps. The ending scene with Miles's father is heartening and satisfying.
