Hogfather, by Terry Pratchett. Discworld #20. It turns out that it's possible I've read it before, and certainly I must have started it before, because I was familiar with the character "Mr. Teatime" pronounced "teh-a-tim-eh," and this book is his only appearance, which I hadn't realized. I know that I once watched the first few minutes of the dramatization with Michelle Dockery, though, so that might have been all of it.

I can't say that I enjoyed it, particularly, because whereas Death and his granddaughter Susan are just fine, the Teatime character and his crew are unpleasant and tiresome, and the same is true for the wizards at the Unseen University, who also had a prominent role in the book. It turned out that this book is the one where Death gets in his famous quote about how we need to believe in the little lies in order to believe in the big ones, like Justice and Mercy - and that actually ties in with the blog post I was writing today.

I realized I was almost halfway through the book today, reading just a few pages a day, and with today being the last day of the traditional Christmas season, I figured I would push through and finish. And I did!

Anyway, if you don't mind a bunch of pell-mell action among crowds of moderately unpleasant folks, the book could be fine. I had a few enjoyable moments.

I must admit, I wasn't a big fan of his books; there were amusing bits, but I didn't find them either funny, nor engaging as stories. I feel like a philistine.
