Day 1226: Visitors from Canada

eve_primeToday our friend DM and his wife TT drove down from Vancouver BC (Canada) to visit us, en route to three national parks. Tomorrow they're headed for Redwood National Park, at the northern end of California, on the coast, then they'll visit Yosemite, and on their way back they'll visit Crater Lake. They'll be back here in about six days, we expect.
DM is the younger brother of JM, who is a childhood friend of J's, and they're both originally from North Carolina. TT is originally from Toronto. They both help run various Girl Guide/scouting activities in BC, in addition to their regular jobs. I hadn't met or interacted with TT before but was very comfortable with her.
Today they left home before 6 am and arrived here by 3:30 pm, having encountered lots of traffic south of Portland. We all chatted in the back yard by the water feature, then ordered Thai food, went on a walk to the far side of the neighborhood park and back, then ate outside with minimal interference from yellowjackets. Earlier we bought a few groceries and said hi to D. at the store.
After they'd gone to bed, I followed up on an earlier part of the conversation. They mentioned passing the 45th parallel (the midpoint between the equator and the north pole), which is not far from Salem, between here and Portland. I knew that we were north of the 44th parallel, but I got to thinking about it and realized that it must not be by very far. So I looked online and then learned how to look at the latitude on my phone... and I found that the 44th parallel is within walking distance of my house! It's about 12 blocks south of us, not far from the city limits and Spencer Butte.

boise is at the 43rd parallel. It is kind of fun to know. :)
