Day 1222: Apples, neighbors
Jul. 26th, 2023 11:56 pmMy friend who is a Soviet history professor, violinist, mom of teenagers, and gardener has an amazing old Gravenstein apple tree, and most years it has hundreds and hundreds of apples, which are ripe just in time for me to collect a sack of apples for D's birthday apple pie. This year was one of those lucky years! I visited with her for 45 minutes this afternoon. She was also making an apple pie.

In the evening, J and I read outside a bit, then watched the second episode of Babylon 5 (really the third episode, as we skipped the pilot), then went on a walk. We saw our neighbor MI out watering his garden. He's very chatty, and we hadn't seen him in many months. He told us he's planning to move into his father-in-law's nicer house as soon as his father-in-law is able to move into the pleasant retirement center down the hill, and then his older son and his girlfriend will move into MI's current house, then his younger son would like to move into the older son's current apartment, all of which MI and his wife own. He told us it's the Chinese custom for the father of the groom to give the couple a house, and they're following that custom, although they're not Chinese. It sure seems like they have a lot of money, though, to own all these residences!

Date: 2023-07-27 03:25 pm (UTC)We have an apple tree that produces a LOT of apples but each one a moth gets and has a bad mark on it. It's a little infuriating but even without that, the apples don't taste too good. I will give them to my ex-boss for his goat.
What a nice family custom, so it's like a dowry or something but from the grooms side...
