Children of Ruin, by Adrian Tchaikovsky. In this sequel to Children of Time, some astronauts leave the world terraformed in the first book and meet the descendants of another human terraforming experiment - and I can't say much more without giving spoilers for one or both books, except to note that one of the humans who originally came to the new planet brought his pet octopuses with him. I enjoyed reading it, but it was rather long, and I'm going to read some other things before I start the third book.

The biggest issue, I think, is that the books feel really, really long. I must read Children of Ruin though; I've just been deterred by the length.
