Day 1201: Very warm Wednesday

Today was hot again, but tomorrow should be cooler! I stayed indoors until nearly 5 pm and got a fair amount of work done, then I sat outside in the shade and read stuff about irony and Edward Abbey. There's a hummingbird enjoying the crocosmia blossoms, and the cats are fascinated - at one point I had its fluttering shadow on the book I was reading. J's photo:



J finished reading Sanderson's new Kickstarter book, and I made more progress on Children of Ruin, and when it was cool enough and not quite yet dark we did a walk.

Are there no hummingbirds there? You have so many exotics that I just assume you have versions of everything else too.

No hummingbirds here, they're native to the Americas. :(

I didn't realize that Europe doesn't have them either, huh.

Today I noticed at least three different birds, maybe four. And from what the internet shows me, they must all be female (probably Anna's hummingbird), as they're all fairly drab. They have brownish whitish chests and heads and a greenness to their backs. One has a flash of red on its throat, one has a ring of white around its neck.

We do at least have starlings and lilac-breasted rollers (though we don't see them often).

Starlings are such a nuisance, although pretty as individuals. I'd never heard of a lilac-breasted roller - wow how beautiful!

Thanks! :) This one has a flash of red on its chest and some green on its back but mostly looks grey. I see it every day. So does Azalyn, so I hope it ignores the flowers nearer to the ground.
