Jun. 4th, 2023 11:17 pmWitch King, by Martha Wells. Her newest book, which came out a few days ago. She took a break from writing Murderbot books to return to fantasy. This world is in many ways very different from ours, not the least because there are different types of people who can use different types of magic, and also because this world's politics and recent history are quite complicated. Because it's so different, and because we're following two storylines at the same time (people trying to solve a problem in the present, and also looking back to when the main characters first met, 60 years ago), it's somewhat difficult to follow everything. Fortunately, there are only a few main characters, and also fortunately, Wells did signal to the reader early on that the two most important characters are good (they save a little girl and act with concern for her well-being, and that did seem to be the main reason to have her in the story). I did enjoy it, but I expect a second reading would help me picture it all a bit better.
