Day 1159: Clarinet people
May. 23rd, 2023 11:53 pmToday’s big fun thing was the symphony master class – the clarinet soloist for the concert coming up gave advice to three local clarinetists, and it’s open to the public. The soloist is Carey Bell, who’s one of the top clarinet players in the country; he’s the principal clarinet for the San Francisco Symphony and appears on lots of recordings. He also comes from Eugene! So I went, since I knew one of the students whom he’d be working with: Logan, who was in the Youth Symphony with D, when D played clarinet too. Logan went on to music school at the university, and he’s about to graduate and go off to clarinet grad school.
So I went and sat down and also said hi to Logan, then I realized the woman sitting behind me with two friends was D’s own clarinet teacher, Cindy, and it turns out that Carey Bell was once Cindy’s student too! Surely the most illustrious among them. She must be so proud! Then my friend Carl came in – he played clarinet in high school, many years ago, and used to attend the master classes regularly. In fact, he’s the one who told me about them. I hadn’t seen him since before the pandemic, and he can’t attend concerts yet as his wife is medically fragile, so it was great to see him today.
It turned out that Carey Bell was highly entertaining, not the least because he reminded me very much of my high school friend Wayne. He has the same build and many of the same mannerisms, although of course his talents are presumably quite different, and surely much of his personality is as well, though he did have a good sense of humor, like Wayne. The whole event was quite interesting, and since I got to talk not only with Logan but also Cindy and Carl, unexpectedly, it felt like quite a success. Oh, also, before the event began I chatted briefly with Anmarie, who was running last night’s trivia contest, and she said I was mentioned in their staff meeting today! Ha ha ha ha ha!
