Children of Time, by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Our premise is that a spaceship of desperate humans who have left the dying Earth are hoping to find a world that earlier generations of terraformers have made hospitable. Their best candidate is a beautiful green planet where an experiment has gone awry - the monkeys intended for "uplift" never made it to the planet, and instead a species of jumping spider has rapidly evolved. The planet is watched over by the remnants of the scientist originally in charge of the experiment, and my favorite part was the scene where she discovers her mistaken beliefs (at around 77% of the e-book). Well, really, my favorite part was the extremely clever ideas the author had on how spiders might evolve. I didn't really like how things at one point hung on a rather contrived coincidence, and also the spiders' eventual solution to their problem was a bit abrupt and not ideal, but I suppose reasonable under the circumstances. I'll definitely read the next book in the trilogy.
