Day 1129: Prodigy?
Apr. 23rd, 2023 11:51 pmFor the seniors in our youth orchestra, one of the highlights of the year is the concerto competition; the winner gets to play a movement concerto at the spring concert. (A concerto is a very difficult piece that they have to memorize; it features their instrument in a solo role, accompanied by the orchestra.) This year five students competed, and today there was a recital for the four who didn’t win.
Meanwhile, a local eighth-grader won the Oregon Mozart Players youth solo competition – a contest open to students no older than 18. So he’s quite young for that! He was invited to play at the recital too.
Perhaps you can guess where this is going. The eighth-grader was mind-bogglingly good, and I felt a bit badly for the other students, especially the one who came after him, who was probably the best otherwise. When the eighth-grader got to the last minute or so of his piece, the most technically challenging part, I whipped out my phone to record him – 20 years from now, we may all know who he is.
