That’s how J. described our evening: He came to the symphony with me, and we heard Auerbach’s “Icarus” and later, Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” which was great. I wondered how the Prokofiev thing was going to work, because the ballet is more than two hours long. It turns out that Prokofiev did a series of three suites, each of which has a bunch of thematic sections, and conductors (like Joseph Young did tonight) usually don’t play one of the suites per se but choose a bunch of the thematic sections from all three suites to tell the story. Also we had an American-born pianist who lives in Spain and has a Persian name; she did a concerto by Saint-Saëns (which didn’t involve any teenagers).
