Book completed

Consider Phlebas, by Iain M. Banks. This is the first book in his Culture series. I assumed the final chapter, whose title is the same as the book, would explain the title, but no. It turns out it's a reference to a character from T.S. Eliot.

Anyway, this is a highly acclaimed science fiction series, and I've long figured I ought to start reading it, so now I have. The author has (had) a great imagination, and there were several very exciting scenes, and several likeable characters. I rather wish the main character were more likeable too, but it makes sense that he wasn't.
