Today was sunny, at least the part of it I saw; it must have rained earlier. I did a bunch of work on that paper – but in a relaxed fashion – and then took a break to start mowing the lawn. Alas, the lawn was very, very wet. I did want to do something outside, though, so I went to the park to look for newts in the creek. Since we still had snow in yesterday’s rain, though, the creek is surely still too cold, and I didn’t see any. And even though it was sunny and not all that cold, I seemed to be the only person in the park.

D started spring term today – I think he intends to graduate this term.

Meanwhile, at sword class today J learned that someone at Friday’s Fight Night had Covid, so now we’re a bit concerned again. Rather, he’s a bit concerned and I was shrugging it off, but within the last hour my throat started getting sore. I hope it was just the citrus in the tangelo I had after dinner!

The most special thing about today, though, is that my old LJ friend Nicole Chung’s second book A Living Remedy came out today, and my copy was on my porch when I got up. I started reading this evening and I’m almost halfway through. Apparently she got a highly favorable review in the New York Times! I’m saving it to read until I finish the book.

I just read the review of that book, wow it sounds really good.
I think it is too sad for me to read though. She sounds like a very special person to have experienced all of that AND to be able to write about it. I can hardly stand to remember the bad times in my life. My hat goes off to her.

(We were very poor growing up and yes my dad had a job in the timber industry, my uncle too. As much as I am relieved for the forests and the Owls, it made things difficult when an industry is lost.)

She sounds like a very brave woman. And of course our system of treating people in need, well it needs so much work. Let alone the prejudice she experienced, tragic.

Hugs, Helen
