The Moon-Spinners, by Mary Stewart. This is my favorite book, but I hadn't read it for a few years - I suggested it for our neighborhood book club when someone wanted something fairly short and accessible. It's a thriller set on Crete in approximately 1962, and the plot is almost entirely different from the Disney movie it inspired. Nicola Ferris arrives a day early for a wildflower-themed vacation with her cousin in a little Cretan fishing village and goes exploring in the surrounding mountains, where she finds herself involved in another person's stressful crisis - he's been shot, and his teenage brother is missing. The landscape descriptions are wonderfully vivid, and although there's some sexism, it's not at all bad for the era.

I vaguely remember that book! I read a lot of Mary Stewart in my late 20's. Now I want to read some of those again, thanks for the reminder. :)
