Day 1090: Food-related mistakes day
Mar. 15th, 2023 11:40 pmI have a reputation for burning rice, although I don't think I ever did so in 2022? I start the rice, then when it comes to the boil and I put the lid on, too often I turn it down to the temperature for cooking pasta (which I do moderately often) rather than the much lower temperature for making rice (which I do nearly as often, I suppose).
Today I rushed out to start some rice while in the middle of working on a complicated spreadsheet; I was holding a variety of details in my head, but I started the rice, put the lid on, then went back to my room to resume work. About 15 minutes later, D. came out of his room and called me out of mine - the house was filled with smoke! I'd put the lid on the rice but hadn't turned the temperature down at all!
I turned on the fan, put Sorin and Ajani in the bathroom, and opened up the house to air out (and to add a lot of pollen to the indoor air, unfortunately). Parker had fun exploring the house while I quickly cooked some pasta instead. Eventually the smoke was clear, the outdoor cats were back outdoors, the indoor cats were back in their usual spots, and I'd eaten dinner. D couldn't make up his mind what he was going to make for his own dinner but settled on Korean ramen, while I packed up my laptop and headed to J's house to hear what he and DG had decided for their Magic travel plans.
So I chatted with them, and DG went home, and J told me what they'd decided so far (no on San Diego in three weeks, maybe on Minneapolis in early May, and no decision yet on Barcelona or Las Vegas later in the year). Then D texted me a photo - his ramen in a big pile on his bedroom carpet. The bowl had been too hot and he'd dropped it. Eek. (Or, as I apparently typed in my return text, "Eel".) He used the phrase "food related mistakes," hence my title.
I went back over to help him clean it up. He had wiped off his desk, making sure his laptop was okay, and was just sitting there looking dejectedly at the ramen. We cleaned it up, and he went to J's to eat some of the cinnamon breadsticks that had come with J and DG's pizza dinner.
So, it's been an evening.

Date: 2023-03-16 11:35 pm (UTC)I think rice is hard to cook myself. I always stay in the kitchen and over watch it and over stir. Where is that happy medium for us, LOL.

Date: 2023-03-17 06:31 am (UTC)I think rice is super-easy to make - which is why I burn it so often?
1-1/3 cups of long-grain rice in a stainless steel saucepan with a good-fitting lid, and 2 cups of cold water. I usually rinse the rice first. Set the heat on high, bring it to a boil, then put the lid on and *ahem* set the heat back to medium low. No stirring. Ready in 20 minutes. Nice and fluffy.
