Feb. 25th, 2023 07:52 pmThe Poppy War, by R.F. Kuang. First in a trilogy, and quite dark. I saw a review of the trilogy that said the first two were okay but the third went too far, and I don't know that I really want to read that! So maybe I'll be done now.
After Babel, and with the title of this one, I assumed that it would also be about the opium wars, and also on an alternate history version of our real world. Instead, it's on a fantasy world based on ours, and the storyline is a fantasy retelling of the Rape of Nanjing. The first half is fine, a girl going off to a special school to learn how to become a military leader, though she's not always sympathetic. By the end of the book, she's a full-fledged anti-hero, having just magically committed total genocide against this world's version of Japan.
