The first chapters alternate viewpoints between Mark and Miles - Miles is his usual lively self, and Mark is tiresome, but he's pursuing a good goal. Then we lose Miles. At that point, I remembered that when I'd read this one before and had gotten to this point, I had realized, "oh yeah, this is Mark's book - necessary in the overall story but not entirely fun to read." Fortunately, immediately after that it becomes more interesting, as Mark starts figuring things out and becoming a more sympathetic character. Then in the last third of the book or so, we get Miles again, but his perspective has become strange and limited, so he's the frustrating one to follow. But then, rather abruptly, Miles becomes normal and Mark becomes strange - and complex - but at least now potentially happy, and Miles is looking forward to their future. Whew!
