Battle of the Linguist Mages, by Scotto Moore. The online library system suggested this book to me when I was trying to get something quite different, and impulsively I decided to try it out. The author is unusually creative! It's fun and moderately funny, too. Our narrator is the very best at a virtual reality video game system called Sparkle Dungeon, which involves all the usual roleplaying video game stuff (combat, weapons, exploring a world), but the game is based on whatever the current equivalent of disco is - powerful thumping music, lots of glitter and mirror balls and all that. Then she's recruited for training in what turns out to be a sort of combat linguistics, using a sci fi invention called "power morphemes" that are a science fiction version of spells - and there are extraordinarily unusual aliens involved too. Over the course of the story, she finds true love and solid friendship, which is good for the reader to hang onto as things get progressively bizarre.

I am extra-tired today, a bit short on sleep, but not nearly as tired as J must be, as he's flying overnight to visit his family in North Carolina. This afternoon he worked on his big work project right up until it was time for him to go. He flew to Seattle, got some nachos and watched the Babylon 5 episode with me and the others via his phone, then got on a plane to Atlanta. He hoped to sleep for at least four hours on that flight, but that would mean going to sleep hours earlier than usual, and he had a small child in the seat beside him. If I can stay awake long enough, I'll hear how that went. Then he makes the connection in Atlanta and flies to his parents' area. His mom has his bed ready for him to collapse upon arrival, I think. He is much better at functioning on a sleep deficit than I am, though.

My book club was going to meet tomorrow to discuss Hester again, but HB's son came back from a weekend birthday party in Vegas with Covid, so we're going to have to reschedule. Maybe I'll just have fun being lazy.
