Our protagonist, Isokrates, is the "helmsman" (basically the captain) of a ship in the navy of Rhodes, during the Hellenistic era, about 100 years after the death of Alexander. Rhodes is a democracy, trying to maintain its position during power struggles between the three dynasties established by Alexander's generals, which control Greece, Syria, and Persia. And Isokrates gets right in the thick of it, having angered a pirate sponsored by Queen Laodike of Syria. There's lots of action, especially pirate-hunting, and romance, and a solid friendship. (The title was a phrase applied to Rhodes itself, so blessed by natural beauty and sunshine.)
