Now D. is 21 years old. He had the day off from work and slept in; once he was up, J. took a break from the 24-hr "hackathon" he's doing for work today, and D. opened his gifts. Then he spent hours waiting on S. for their plans to go to a fancy new arcade at the mall - first she had to get COVID-tested since she's still sick (negative, thankfully), then she changed her mind repeatedly, and when it was finally time to take the bus downtown, they missed it. (Honestly, I'm glad she wasn't out spreading her cold germs!)

Once he'd finally given up on their plan, we ordered pizzas, which we ate in the shade in J's yard, and D. had some hard strawberry lemonade. He's not interested in drinking, particularly, but it has a nice flavor (though it's much too sweet for me). He specifically did not want to go to a bar to get a free drink for his 21st birthday; I assume they still do that? Then we looked at the heraldry/video game box art puzzle some more, then D. did some social stuff online while I made the pie, and just now we had some pie, before his birthday was done. A three-stage family birthday party!

After we ate some pie, D. entertained me with Korean linguistics trivia. Apparently, those Koreans in-the-know about their language are proud that they've "corrected" the pronunciation of English loan words from their original, Japanese-influence forms. That is, in many places where an "ah" sound had been used, now an "oh" sound is used, which they believe is more accurate (although frankly, they both sound equally off to native English speakers). Example: for hamburger, "hambaga" has been replaced by "hamboga." However, most Koreans just associate the "ah" sound with older and more rural speakers, not realizing that it originally came from Japanese. I also learned that some vowels (ah, oh) are considered "light" versus two others (of which one was ooh) are "dark," so with onomatopoeia for crying, etc., "ooh" sounds are more serious.
