Day 493: Another rice-fail
Jul. 21st, 2021 11:57 pmHeh, yet again I wandered away in the middle of making rice, when I should have waited for it to boil so I could put the lid on and turn the heat down. My poor scorched saucepan. I realized what was up when I smelled the smoke in my bedroom - I glanced over at the air purifier and read that the particulate count, usually 0 or 1, was maxed out at 999. Then I dashed out into the smoky main room and the kitchen and threw out the burnt rice, eventually making egg noodles for my Lebanese meatballs instead.
The thing is, the new smoke detector never went off! I'd put it atop the fridge, and there are plastic bags up there too, and maybe they'd smothered it? Once I knew about the problem I didn't want to hear the alarm, so I left it like that until the air purifier said the levels were in the green zone again (I'd brought it out to the livingroom once my bedroom had improved). Once I did retrieve the smoke alarm and pressed the test button, it also went off for real. Oh well.
(Yes, I know I should buy a new rice cooker.)
On the upside, I managed to make both the Lebanese meatballs and an asparagus risotto on the same day! These have been my main foods lately for which I'll make a multi-day batch at once. The risotto requires near-constant tending for about 40 minutes, but I manage not to wander off too far by repeatedly setting the timer for 2 or 3 minutes. With luck, I'll get more sleep tonight than I did last night and will be less distractible tomorrow.
