It's a bit of a mashup of Beauty and the Beast with Little Red Riding Hood, and of course werewolves. This time Bella is very pragmatic, assertive, and I suppose emotionally mature. My favorite part was the creative reason for why she's stuck in the castle with the "Beast" - he's a werewolf, he's bitten her, and so she has to be quarantined.
Back when I met Misty Lackey, which was either January or February 1983, I don't think she'd published any novels yet, just stories, and she was an enthusiastic wannabe. I read online yesterday that she now cranks out an average of 5.5 novels a year! I think she's most successful when she's tweaking an established formula, as she is in the 500 Kingdoms books. I've enjoyed some of her other books, too, certainly, but there was one with such a major plot hole that I had to wonder whether her editors even bother.
