Jul. 11th, 2021 10:32 pmMy Year Abroad, by Chang-Rae Lee. This book was pretty intense, both with vivid descriptions of food and exotic places, and eventually with strangeness. Our protagonist, a college drop-out at age 20, is living with a 30-something woman and her son; the latter two are in a witness protection program, and our protagonist has just returned from troubles overseas. We learn his story in flashbacks - a kindly Chinese immigrant businessman takes him under his wing as his assistant; they fly to China; he helps entertain some colleagues and clients, then things take a very strange turn.
I'm still not sure what I think of it - I certainly enjoyed reading at least for the first half or so...
I also can't figure out where I heard of the book, which I'd requested from the library months ago. (A search of my inbox tells me that
calypso72 read it, but I didn't see her review back then, nor would it have encouraged me to read it if I had.) A mystery!
The author's name was familiar, and when I looked him up online I saw that he'd been at the University of Oregon when his first book came out, which was a great success and gave him great career opportunities elsewhere; I'm pretty sure I read a profile of him way back when he was here. (I also saw that he shares D's birthday.) Will I read more of his books? Maybe??
