Day 469: In which we endure 107-110° heat
Jun. 27th, 2021 11:55 pmToday's official temperature was 110°F, although the weather station a few houses down from us maxed out at 107°. The hottest it's ever been here since people started measuring it was 108°. We had most of the week to prepare, and we all just stayed inside, more or less. It was hotter than this in Portland yesterday, and today, and maybe tomorrow, but for whatever reason, Eugene's expected to return to 91° or so tomorrow.
For context, we get weather over 100° about as often as we get measurable snow, which is maybe once every 2-3 years. I think a lot of people went to the coast; it only reached 65° in Coos Bay. Also for context, the majority of houses in Eugene do not have air conditioning. We are very fortunate.
At 6 pm, when it was at its hottest, J. and I went on a short, slow walk. There was a good breeze, which felt nice, but I kept thinking that if someone accidentally started a fire in the forest that surrounds our neighborhood, that wind would be big trouble.
D. wisely never left the house at all.
I was more productive than yesterday; I wrote a blog post, inspired by a link
calypso72's husband sent me. I also eventually did most of the laundry, and I kept the outdoor cats fed. Most of them don't drink water out of bowls, but I remembered that Ajani gets most of his water from wet food, so I gave them extra of that.
