Today D. did get up in time, took the buses to west Eugene, and completed his first-ever 8-hour work day! He put labels on packaging, lined up thousands of bottles, and sealed boxes. Then he agreed to do it again all next week. I am sure this will do great things for his confidence in this context where he has so little experience.

Meanwhile, I went to a downtown coffee shop to chat with my friend GP, a newly retired professor. She told me about her three upcoming translation projects (medieval Italian) and a book she'd like to write on intellectual property. She's headed to Italy on Wednesday (her husband is already there), then they'll return in late December for winter and spring terms, but then he'll retire too and they'll live year-round in Italy.

After that, I zoomed around to two libraries and closed the estate account at my mom's bank, then hastened home to read outside - too hot for anything else.

Yesterday, my outdoor cat Parker remembered the game we played when he was a kitten - I'd reach toward him and he'd swipe at my hand - and we played that a while. He's gentle, but his claws are long enough that the back of my left hand is now covered with red marks. After a while, he tucked his paws under him and consented to let me pet his head. As a kitten, he was the most sociable of the three, but he's much more wary now. Today we played the game a bit again, but J. was also reading outdoors with me, so Parker was more cautious. Then he climbed the fence in a rather half-hearted attempt to hunt a squirrel.

We are all dreading this weekend's forecast heat wave. I don't think I've ever in my life experienced weather hotter than 106F or so, but they're saying 104F tomorrow and 114F!!!! on Sunday. As if we lived in Arizona. That's bad enough but it's only June, so what will the rest of the summer bring? At least it should return to the 90s here on Monday, and thankfully our houses are among the few locally with a/c.
