Day 465: Lab group "meeting"
Jun. 23rd, 2021 11:56 pmToday was the first in-person meeting of G's lab group since maybe February of last year. Classes ended a few weeks ago, but many of the grad students live in town. G. chose an area of outdoor seating that he could see from his campus window and scheduled our meeting to start just after 3 pm, when the area first became shaded, which was great as it was pretty warm today, maybe 91. I was there first, then G, then I was delighted to see AL, whom I'd met with in person a month ago, and then five more. It's an international group - AL was born in South Africa (but raised partly in California), VV is from India, C is from Vancouver Canada, and P is from Iran. P and his partner have a four-month old baby boy! It was fun to hear what everyone's been up to. G's planning to help his older son move to Florida soon to join the Air Force.
We spent about two hours together, then I walked to my office for printing, then all the way back to the far side of campus, where I'd left my car. Even though today was a break in the Olympic Trials, they still didn't let us use the convenient campus parking spots. I was quite wilted at that point, although I'd tried to walk mostly in the shade. J. had gone to play Magic in Springfield, so I spent the evening reading papers outside in his back yard, with Blitzen keeping me company. She decided today that it's okay for me to pet her while I'm sitting in a chair; previously it had been limited to sitting on a step. She's a funny one.
Meanwhile, D. got up the nerve to call someone back at Safeway - he'd gotten a voicemail that they're looking for a deli clerk and a barista for their Starbucks outlet. He gave it a lot of thought and decided that neither of those would really suit him, so we practiced him explaining that and that he'd like to know if they have any openings for cashiers and courtesy clerks. She thought they might have a cashier opening soon!
