Day 463: D's job hunt
Jun. 21st, 2021 11:48 pmD. wants a summer job, which is great; he needs that kind of experience. Unfortunately, he wasn't in the job hunt frame of mind back in April, when most summer jobs on campus were filled, and he doesn't have any work experience beyond some childcare volunteering, so he's not qualified for much. He does now have a food handler's card, as part of applying to work at the Olympic Trials, but it turns out that his friends who are working there had applied back in, like, April.
I assume he could get a job at his dad's nursery, watering plants, but he has no good way to get there, since he doesn't have a driver's license or car, and it's not convenient by bus (about two hours to cover the 10-mile distance each way). He's probably qualified to work at the Magic store downtown, but he doesn't really want to be in that environment after dark, given how scruffy people tend to be downtown after dark, especially around the bus station, and we don't even know if there are openings. He's applied at Safeway, but they haven't contacted him.
There's a job opening at the front desk at the public pool nearest us, and I think he did the application for it, but since he doesn't have work experience he thinks he's unlikely to get contacted. I suggested Starbucks, as there's one in Safeway and one a mile or so away, but he doesn't think they'd want to hire someone who doesn't drink coffee (upsets his stomach).
Today he applied for two campus jobs, one working in food service in a residential hall, and one doing some sort of custodial work. He's optimistic about the former, since they say they need not have any experience, and they appear to mostly hire seniors (that is, fourth-year university students, which is what he'll be). His brother did dishwashing in the main residential dining hall, which I think he found fun - maybe that's what it would be? Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, they're doing all the summer orientations remotely and may not need to fill these positions until mid-September.
My position is that yes, it would be a great experience for him to have a job, and he should absolutely apply for them, but since he may not be able to get one until thee fall, he should be (a) volunteering at something he cares about or enjoys, and/or (b) taking summer classes to broaden his skills. Today was the first day of summer term, though, and he decided he wasn't interested.
Other things about today - J's heat pump was repaired (blown fuses) around 5 pm, after the temperature indoors had reached 88. Yuck. I avoided his house, beyond finishing the laundry. Our grant proposal is mostly done. The publisher says they're still waiting on the peer reviewer, which is frustrating. It was quite lovely outside around 8 p.m., though, and we had a nice walk. One house had very large lilies.
