Day 444: The world's newest band teacher
Jun. 2nd, 2021 11:54 pmWhen D. started private clarinet lessons, the student right before him was two years older and much more advanced, a very nice and chatty young man who made a point to look out for D. for the next two years, being sure he was getting recognition in school, helping him out at the All State band event where they shared a room with two others, and being a generally nice guy. He went off to a university in Colorado, then after a year returned to our own university's music school. I've been following along, attending his recitals (one in person and one, his senior recital this spring, on Zoom), chatting with him at events.
Even in high school, it was obvious that he would make a great band teacher - he's absolutely a natural. In high school, he was student-teaching at the middle school, and that's what he studied at the university, music teaching and clarinet performance. He mentioned he was hoping to get a job somewhere between here and Salem, and today he announced that he'd been hired at a fancy-sounding private school in Corvallis, yay! I poked around online and saw that his boyfriend is in a Ph.D. program at the university there, so that works out just about perfectly.
In other news, I signed up for a particular car today - a blue Camry that will arrive in 7-14 days. Not the one with the features I didn't want, but one from the other dealer, for $2000 cheaper. My personal carbon footprint is pretty low (our house is all-electric, and our local electricity is mostly hydro, and I don't drive all that much), so I don't feel badly about it.
I'm still waiting to hear on the book, but I made good progress on the grant proposal. J. and I went for a walk to the park, even though it was hot around 6 pm (89 degrees F). On our way back up, we were noticing a wild turkey in the field, when we saw a bearded man jogging down the bike path in the heat. And it was D! We thought he was planning to jog all the way to the university (S. was doing her last K-pop dance band performance), but he was just hastening to catch the Hilyard Street bus.
