Several weeks ago, we had the annual Musicking conference online, and I got to hear a Zoom recording of this year's oratorio, San Nicola di Bari, by Bononcini, from 1693 I think. The story was pretty much non-existent (my friend today described it as, "St. Nicholas goes to college and converts his roommate"), and I didn't really notice the music much, but it was a mildly positive experience overall.

Then, thanks to some inside connections, I got to be one of 50 people invited to see it tonight at the Lutheran church across the street from the university. And, wow. The story was still meh, of cousre, but the sound quality was fantastic, and this time I noticed the music so much more. I also got to have several fun conversations with people I hadn't seen in a long time.

D. did his seventh driving practice tonight. I think something's clicked, as he's doing it pretty smoothly and comfortably now. We went early enough (10:30 pm) that there was some traffic on the road, and he did fine with that. At one point, some obnoxious vehicle was riding his tail up the hill to the elementary school, and I tensed up, but he did okay. He said it felt like a pop quiz.
