Day 437: Lovely weather, with butterflies
May. 26th, 2021 10:14 pmI spent four hours outside today, which I hope wasn't a mistake allergy-wise! Maybe I'll regret it tomorrow. Today was great, though.
First I met up at Hideaway Bakery (outdoor seating, with flowers and butterflies) with AL, one of my fellow grad students in G's lab, who finished her PhD a few months ago. She's super-busy with work but wanted to talk about a paper we're writing. We got caught up on personal things too, and I gave her a copy of Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw, as she also likes fantasy set in 19th century Britain (or a fantasy analogue). It turns out she lives in the neighborhood now - maybe I can see her more often! The occasion also marked my first use of actual cash in months; I bought a beverage.
After I got home, J. and I went on a walk, then we read outside together 'til it got cooler and windy.
Also, today I chatted on the phone with the program officer at the National Cancer Institute, and she did think we should do that proposal!
Then later I was invited to send a journal publisher my feedback on my very frustrating manuscript experience with them, the one where the editor decided to go with the opinion of the reviewer who (a) admitted she knew nothing of my topic and (b) insisted I write about her topic instead. It wasn't fun to revisit all the stress of that, but at least I got to tell someone about it.
