Soon after I woke today, I realized that maybe the raptor center is actually open this time of year, and that we could take DG and AA there to celebrate DG's birthday today. And it was! They'd gone off to the woods for a hike but were enthusiastic and met us there at 3 pm, giving us an hour to spend with the birds. It was sprinkling very slightly - not too much.

Our two favorite birds were gone, the mockingbird whose name I don't recall (not a raptor, but corvids aren't all that dissimilar, and it's good for them to have a few highly social birds to meet the public), and Puck the kestrel, whose death had been reported in the newspaper maybe. There's a new kestrel, Parker. AA's favorite was Padawan, an owl with that strange shape of face. Hm, barn owl.

In the evening, J. and I played the nice little game his game-of-the-month club had chosen, A Short Hike. We completed most of it, though I guess there are a few more "achievements" we could still do. It would be a great game for someone who just wants to walk or fly around doing things - there's no combat, nothing is "hard," and yet it doesn't get boring either. The premise is that Claire, a girl who's a bird dressed in blue, is visiting an island with her aunt, who's a ranger. She learns that if she hikes to the top of Hawk Peak, her cell phone will work and she'll be able to get a phone call she's hoping for, but meanwhile she should just enjoy the day. She collects shells for a child who wants them, learns to play "beachstickball" with friends, and finds lots of coins she can spend (on, for example, a ranger hat) and golden feathers she can use to climb vertically. There are lots of things to discover and people to help. We both thought it was great.
