Jan. 13th, 2021 12:43 pmMy Lady Jane, by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. I assume that's one author for each of the three alternating points of view. This book was tremendously fun - it's a comic retelling of the story of Lady Jane Grey, in an alternate fantasy universe. Here, instead of the conflict between Protestants and Catholics, we have E∂ians (pronounced eth-EE-ans) and Verities. E∂ians are humans with an alternate animal form, which they can normally take at will, and Verities are humans who can't, and who consider themselves the only real humans. Henry VIII had turned into a raging lion at some point, and his three children have different attitudes toward E∂ians. Mary thinks they should all be burned, Edward wistfully wishes he could be one, and Bess is too prudent to divulge her perspective.
But Edward is (apparently) dying, and his close advisor Lord Dudley urges him to sign an act of succession in favor of his cousin Jane Grey, whom Dudley has just had married off to his younger son, who goes by G. Since G is a gorgeous steed between dawn and dusk, Dudley expects to exert a lot of control over Jane's government. Things don't work out that way.
The authors wrote a trilogy about Janes, and this is the first. I look forward to reading the next one, about Jane Eyre, and then I'll decide if I'm up to reading the third, about Calamity Jane.
(Oh, my Mirajane icon is especially relevant for this post, ha! Oh, and for two reasons! First, she's a Jane too, and second, she has an alternate form...)
